I love using picture books wherever possible with my students. Having them on hand in the classroom, and making time to read stories, helps to build love for books. My students love listening to me read. But, they’ll also go to the library independently and look at books too.
I like to pull out different books each month to match holidays, seasons and current themes. For St Patrick’s Day, this book is always a firm favourite. If you haven’t read it yet – go get it now! What’s a ‘book companion’?
When I talk about book companions, not everyone is always sure of what I mean. It’s basically a resource that you can use with a book. It helps to continue the learning after finishing reading the book.
What’s included?
So, what’s included in my ‘How to Catch a Leprechaun’ book companion?
- Symbols for your students to match to different pages throughout the book. I hand students out one symbol each before the story starts. They have to make sure they’re listening and looking so that they are ready to match their symbol to the correct page. This is great for attention, symbol recognition and understanding skills.
- Visual comprehension worksheets. Many comprehension worksheets require students to write down their answers – but some of my kiddos aren’t quite there yet! So, I made this visual comprehension worksheet. I read the questions to my students and then they have to choose their answer by pointing or circling the correct picture.
